Backlinking too Hard and Fast results in the Google SandboxI don’t know who first started this god awful myth, but it has caused a lot of people heartache and headache.
In case you didn’t notice, the “sandbox” is a myth.
It’s a cheap explanation of why sites suddenly drop in rankings. Usually the myth is usually coupled with backlinking, meaning that backlinking has caused the drop in rankings.
This is bull.Backlinking will not get your site into the
“SandBox!”There is no sandbox. It doesn’t exist.
What usually SEEMS to happen is this – you’ve been doing a lot of backlinking lately and your site is now ranking.Suddenly, you fall in rankings.
It gets blamed on the
“backlinking”, so you freak out and stop. But then your site never returns, so most people believe the sandbox is real and your site has been eternally doomed for low rankings.
This is not true.
What has REALLY happened is this: Your site is new so Google is getting a feel for your content.The algorithm says “Are you getting backlinks because people like your site, or is it you doing it? Also, is your site just temporarily popular?”
So, they drop the rankings. When you freak out and stop backlinking, Google goes “ok, so he is no longer popular. We will keep him below because that is where he needs to be.”
Had you continued to backlink regardless of your rankings, you would eventually, in a week or month, bounce back much higher than before because Google reevaluated your site and links, finding you to continue to be popular.
Finally, if this myth where true, I would be spamming the net right now for all the high traffic keywords, ensuring my competition all fall in rankings and my sites ended up on top!
Seriously, if the sandbox and backlinking too much would be true, it would be too easy to ruin the competition.“But what about getting deindexed?!”You know, there was a story I read not too long ago about a guy who got deindexed because he thought he backlinked too much.
He had been running a piece of software and he just went to town! Thousands and thousands of links all at once!
He had never done that with his site before and he had some minor rankings.
So, Google took notice and evaluated his site. After the evaluation, he found his site GONE! Out of Google altogether!
He immediately blamed it on the software, saying that it was the backlinkings fault.
But, after some investigating, it was found that he had 2 big problems. The first was a rogue, broken pop up script that was preventing people from leaving his site on a certain page.
The second was the fact his site loaded WAY too slow.
You see, the reason he was banned from Google had nothing to do with the backlinking. What happened was Google noticed the backlinking and went to check out his site, ready to bump up his rankings! But when it got to the site, it found things it didn’t like and decided to deindex him instead!
