Subject: Flood resistance of WD VelociRaptor drives
Hi Western Digital
You usually buy hard drives on the basis of $/GB or access time or even MTBF. I'd never considered flood-resistance as a criteria for purchase.
My house went under during the 2011 Brisbane floods in Australia - the worst floods in 40 years. My house wasn't alone as over 10,000 families were affected. For three days, my house and all my possessions sat under four metres (12 feet) of mud, sewage and diesel filth.

Afterwards, we dug through my possessions and extracted my computer. My computer is somewhere in that photo underneath 4 ft of debris.

Here's the reason I'm writing to let you know all this. I had eleven hard disks in my house; various makes and models. Of those eleven, every single one was destroyed by three days of immersion except for one. I extracted the WD VelociRaptor, washed it off, let it dry for a day, plugged it in, and it worked like nothing had happened in the meantime.
Rest assured, this will be the only hard disk I will be buying from now on.

p.s. The supercomputer I manage contains 430 of these drives. I have yet to see one of those fail either!
Regards
Gerald
