There are numerous things to say about each international school in Bangkok, Thailand. As for Rugby School Thailand, you may already recognise its name due to the School’s history deriving from over 450-years of British private school legacy, and its unique ethos ‘The Whole Person, The Whole Point.’ At Rugby School Thailand, your children will experience an excellent British curriculum along with co-curricular activities such as sport, music, art, performing arts, and many more.

There is a great deal to talk about Rugby International School Thailand ranging from the gigantic campus with facilities to accompany students’ activities, smaller class size, or that Rugby School Thailand is the first flagship international division of Rugby UK. However, there are still a lot more things about us that you may not know about this leading international school.

Let’s look at 5 facts about Rugby International School that you may not know:

1. The School Lake
Did you know: that Rugby School Thailand gets its own water supply from the surrounding lakes. On the campus, there are a total of five lakes connected to each other. The smallest lake is 5,000 cubic metres in size, it is known as the ‘Peanut Lake,’ while the largest lake called ‘Concert Lake’ extends up to 160,000 cubic metres; the latter is where events and concerts take place. ‘The Westlake’ was named in honour of Nigel Westlake, the School’s founding Headmaster, and is where students can enjoy co-curricular programmes such as sailing and kayaking.

2. Rugby School Goes Green

Rugby School Thailand is committed to the wellbeing of the environment it sits in and much has been done to support the campus to be more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible. There are 2209 solar panels across the whole campus, each creating 340 watts of electricity per day. The School is collaborating with the BANPU INFINERGY team to create  renewable energy sources, which has been a successful partnership. Rugby School is able to generate over 25% of the school’s energy supply and aims to keep increasing this number in the near future. As the School grows, it  commits to keep up its green credentials with more solar panels being installed and plans for one of the lakes (‘Moon Lake’) to host over 300 floating panels.

3. The ‘9’ Landscape

Noone would notice this particular detail unless they were flying a helicopter or a drone. Near the ‘Concert Lake,’ you can see the number 9 in Thai numeric on the ground. This was created in the honour of the late King Rama 9, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. If you get the chance, look out for this beautiful detail!

4. Rich Rugby Heritage

As the name suggests, Rugby School has a long history with the sport. In fact, rugby was invented at Rugby School back in March 1823 when William Webb Ellis, a Rugby School student, picked up a football in his arms and ran with it, thus creating a ‘rugby’ play style which later became the world-famous sport of today.

5. The ‘Gold’ Temple
When visiting Rugby School, at the start of the long driveway, you can see a religious shrine that says ‘Gold’ in Thai. People from across the country come here to make wishes. If their wish comes true, they return to the temple with a promised gift to say thank you. Occasionally, during the evening you will notice an outdoor cinema screen showing movies inside the temple - this is an example of a thank you gift, as it is believed that the spirit of the shrine enjoys movies.
